There are scant opportunities for shadow here in Russia in January with so little sun and daylight. At this particular site, Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin, everything indoors was gilded and mirrored, but outside the bleak mid-winter kept things a dull, flat gray. Nonetheless, there is a sense of shadow here under an outdoor arch on the grounds of the palace.
